Stephanie Smith, MD
Stephanie Smith, MD is the Director of Service Delivery of the Division of Global Psychiatry. She is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, the Director of the Program in Global Mental Health Equity at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), and co-Director of Mental Health at the global non-profit Partners In Health (PIH). Dr Smith’s expertise and scholarship is in mental health program implementation and implementation science, including capacity building of non-specialist providers for evidence-based mental health intervention scale-up, and evaluation of mental health services in resource-limited settings.
Through her work at BWH and PIH, she has supported the development of community-based mental health service delivery platforms, and the establishment of learning collaboratives in mental health care delivery, across multiple global sites including Haiti, Kazakhstan, Lesotho, Liberia, Malawi, Mexico, Navajo Nation, Peru, Russia, Rwanda, and Sierra Leone, as well as in Massachusetts.
Dr. Smith’s work has been supported by grants from the National Institute of Mental Health, Grand Challenges Canada, World Health Organization/USAID, and the Blue Cross Blue Shield Foundation of Massachusetts, among others. Dr. Smith continues her clinical practice as a consult-liaison psychiatrist on the Medical Psychiatry service at BWH, and actively teaches and mentors psychiatry residents and fellows, medical students, and other allied health professionals in the principles of public and global mental health.
