Prior to COVID-19 mental disorders were a major public health problem reaching crisis levels, with a tremendous unmet mental health needs of populations around the globe. Mental health and substance use disorders account for 23% of all years lived with disability across the globe – that is more than cancer, cardiovascular conditions, infectious diseases, and neonatal conditions combined[1]. Investing in the discovery and the delivery of localized mental health care is essential for the long-term health and resilience of all societies. Today, globally, our shared mental health challenge is encompassed by a growing burden of illness with inadequate psychiatric and preventive services, climate change and human displacement, disasters, conflicts and psychological trauma, and inequity within and between societies.
The Division works to build capacity, conduct research, and provide technical assistance to reduce the tremendous burden that mental health disorders and a range of challenges to mental health present worldwide. Our work is driven by international partnerships, based in evidence, and focused on systems change. In 2024-25 the Division is focused on supporting the development of the new Community and Global Psychiatry Program within the MGH/McLean Adult Psychiatry Residency Training Program, developing a community of practice in global mental health delivery across MGH and MassGeneral Brigham with elaboration of a new MassGeneral Brigham Collaborative in Global Mental Health Delivery, expanding collaborations around existing training programs in Rwanda, Sierra Leone and elsewhere, and supporting trainees in developing their interests and skills as global psychiatrists.

To expand quality psychiatric care for the global community. We imagine a world in which all people have the information and resources they need to build the mental health systems they envision for themselves and their communities across diverse contexts.
