Ways to Getting Involved

Thank you for your interest! We offer a range of ways to get involved with the Division of Global Psychiatry. From our Monthly Dinner Series to our Global Psychiatric Clinical Research Training Program, there are a variety of opportunities for people to learn about and participate in the work of the Division.

Monthly Global Psychiatry Dinner Series

During the academic year, we host a monthly dinner series where we invite a speaker in the field of global mental health to discuss his or her work. The dinners are typically held on the third Monday of the month between September and June. If you would like to receive emails about these, as well as other monthly updates from the Global Division, please click here to subscribe to our mailing list.

Students & Interns

Undergraduate Students
We occasionally have opportunities for undergraduate students to intern with the Division. Students can apply for a full-time internship to work on administrative and academic-oriented projects. Candidates must provide a resume, cover letter, writing sample, and two references. Applicants should have a strong interest in global health, psychiatry/psychology, or cross-cultural mental health. S/he must be proficient with Microsoft Word, Excel, and reference management software, such as Endnote. It is helpful if s/he has working knowledge of research using biomedical databases such as MEDLINE, Pubmed, Cochrane Databases, and PsychoInfo. Candidates will be accepted on a rolling and as-needed basis. Please send the information listed above to MGHGlobalPsychiatry@partners.org with the subject line “Undergraduate Internship Application.”

Graduate Students
Graduate internship opportunities become available intermittently. Graduate interns can function in research, administrative or special project roles. Past graduate students have analyzed data and prepared manuscripts, had a faculty member mentor their doctoral thesis, developed business strategies for projects, worked at international sites, and conducted background research. Candidates must provide a resume, cover letter, writing sample, and two references. Please note in your cover letter which projects of ours are of particular interest to you. Please note that all internships are unpaid and that we cannot sponsor visas or provide accommodation for interns. We also require a commitment of 5-6 months for all internships.

Overseas Elective

MGH/McLean Adult and Child Psychiatry Residents can select an international elective rotation for one month during the PGY-III and three months during the PGY-IV years. Residents participating in the international elective gain a broad experience in the delivery of psychiatric services in low- to middle-income countries and areas affected by disaster or conflict. The goal is to provide them with the skills necessary to make informed diagnostic and therapeutic decisions in cross-cultural, resource-limited settings, enable them to conduct pilot research or participate on existing studies, and help develop policy or training initiatives.

Trainees are supervised by US psychiatrists and psychologists (often via web conference), and work and learn alongside in-country clinical mentors, staff, and trainees. Residents are expected to lead a case conference or journal club discussion on a topic relevant to his or her experience upon return. In addition, each resident is expected to document the experience in a blog or scholarly article. Past residents have worked in Australia, Belize, Brazil, Cambodia, Chile, China, Ethiopia, Haiti, Indonesia, Liberia, Mexico, Nepal, Peru, and South Africa, among other places.

Residents can apply for funding through the MGH Center for Global Health and the Partners Center of Expertise. Psychiatry residents are encouraged to contact MGHGlobalPsychiatry@partners.org to discuss travel interests.
