Event Title: Seminar with Dr. Marta Rondon: Exposures to Violence and Perinatal Mental Health

Description: Dr. Rondon is a psychiatrist at the Instituto Nacional Materno Perinatal, the largest maternity hospital in Peru, and associate professor at Cayetano Heredia Peruvian University in the Department of Medicine, Unit of Psychiatry and Mental Health. Dr. Rondon is member of the task force on Violence of the World Psychiatric Association and was the President of the International Association for Women’s Mental Health. She is also a visiting professor at Universidad Nacional Mayor de San Marcos and Universidad Federico Villareal and attending psychiatrist at Instituto Peruano de Paternidad Responsible (a branch of IPPF), where she is also an advisor in the AMA (Atención a la Mujer Ahora) project, which endeavors to protect the rights and improve services for women experiencing unwanted pregnancy. This work comprises training and empowering providers in the recognition and early management of common psychiatric symptoms in women of reproductive age. Dr. Rondon is the founder of the Grupo Impulsor de la Reforma, and member of the steering committee (since 2008). This multidisciplinary group that endeavors to improve the situation of mental health care in Peru by means of advocacy and continuing education to mental health providers. She is also the founder of the Peruvian Association for Women’s Mental Health, and a consultant for the Ombudsman’s Office, the Pan American Health Organization and Promsex. Her interests lie in the realm of human rights and the right of women to health, and mental health in particular. Consequently, her research and scholarship focuses at the social determinants of women’s mental health, the management of depression and other common psychiatric disorders in a primary care setting.
